The University of Maryland McKeldin Library began, in 1962, the mechanization of its circulation procedures to meet ever-increasing demands for more efficient services.

The writer first introduces the university library’s card-oriented circulation system using the IBM unit record equipment. Then, he describes its tape-oriented system begun in 1969, using the computer UNIVAC 9300, to which the former system was converted after the seven-year operation, because the library found it necessary to have still more efficient system.

The writer hopes that some of the problems of the present circulation system discussed here will be helpful for those who are exploiting possibilities of mechanizing similar systems in their own libraries.

The writer expresses his gratitude for the help to prepare this report given by Mr. Tamas E. Doszkocs, Data Processing Department, McKeldin Library of the University of Maryland.
