In July, 1960, a new method to evaluate services of medical libraries was developed by a group of Dr. R. H. Orr, President of the Institution for Advancement of Medical Communication. It is an inventory composed of 54 sections, each of which represents the aspect of services a library offers, from the view point of individual users of the library.

They made preliminary tests to quantify the service of libraries, and the results obtained through interviews with directors of medical libraries were weighed by a panel of professional medical librarians.

The author re-examined Orr's evaluation method as applied to four medical libraries in Japan, analysed its effectivenss, and pointed out some problems encountered during the study.

The inventory is originally composed of 54 sections, but the author actually tested the first 29 sections. As compared with traditional surveys using superficial questionnaires, this method gives more clear and accurate evalutions of the service which is provided by the library to individual users.
