Since computers were introduced to the library data processing, these powerful machines had tremendous influence on the libraries.

As the result, pros and cons of library automation are discussed in many books and papers. But there are relatively few articles which deal with the problems caused by changes in computers.

It is usual that many libraries have no own computers and are using ones that are beyond their control (for example, campus computer center). This means libraries are only one of users, and it is likely that changes in computers occur without any consideration of the libraries.

Changes in computers force the library to convert data and programs processed in the superseded computer system to fit in the new one. Sometimes even reprogramming becomes necessary.

One of the most important features of library data processing is its continuity. Therefore conversion or reprogramming must be done without any interruption and delay of scheduled data processing. Also conversion or reprogamming necessiates much money and time. Therefore, mechanized library system receives strong influence by changes in computers.

This paper describes the influence and accompanying problems, discussing probable solutions to these problems.
