200 psychological journals covered in 1979 version of Psychological Abstracts were analysed by the classification codes of articles included in each journals through a cluster analysis methodology. The journals were grouped into three sub-clusters with 13 journal groups which principally corresponded to classification scheme utilized in the Abstracts.

The results was compared with Pinski’s clusters of psychological journals which were based on the names of journals and the citation analysis. Diversity was found between the two kinds of clusters which leads to the conclusion that the names sometimes bring to the false recognition of the characteristics of journals.
