The purpose of this paper is to examine the diffusion process of knowledge in the specialty through diachronic citation networks.

In a previous study, the author identified the co-cited papers which were looked upon as the paradigm in library and information science by using the co-citation technique. In this study, the diffusion process of knowledge is discovered by diagraming citation linkages, which are networks formed by proceeding from those co-cited papers to those that cite them, then referring to those papers citing the citers, and so on. The data used are obtained from the Social Sciences Citation Index (1966–1980, 1983).

The results show that: (1) The citation networks are formed by quite a small group of papers in the specialty, and show a rather tight pattern of multiple relationships. Such papers are looked upon as active research fronts. (2) The citation frequency is not necessarily correlated with the impact of individual papers. Of the papers which are not cited very frequently, some papers are cited by the important papers. Such papers play an important role in the diffusion process of knowledge in the specialty.
