This paper discusses a guide of a self learning system for library use and information retrieval. The guide consists of six categories, which are derived from the processes of research and information retrieval. These categories are understanding of topics and disciplines, know-how of information retrieval, searching books & articles, fact findings, proof, and writing papers. Reference books are arranged by these categories in the guide. The guide focuses on multi-, cross-, trans-, and inter-disciplinary studies for students. Accordingly, its arrangement is different from Sheehy’s Guide to Reference Books, which is arranged by disciplines and edited for librarians. This article suggests that it is necessary to develop self BI guide based on cognitive science in order to make up for a deficit in one-shot lecture BI and reference service, and regards a self BI guide as an intermediate between them. It also focuses on users’ independence from librarians in information seeking. There is a liberation from library anxiety in the background of a construction of the self BI guide.
