これまで，「情報」概念は2つの捉え方をされてきた情報をモノとして捉える立場とモノではないという立場である。両者を統一的に捉えることはまだ行われていない。本稿では，「情報」はモノではないという立場から「情報」概念を定義し，同時に，なぜモノのようにみえることもあるのかを説明した。さらに，筆者の「情報」概念の定義と，これまでの代表的な「情報」概念の定義との比較を行った。また，情報検索や情報利用など図書館情報学における種々の「情報」を冠する用語の検討が必要であることを指摘した。
The concept of information has traditionally been treated from two points of view: one assumes that information is a “thing” and the other assumes that it is a “non-thing” (typically, a process). To this point, no approach has attempted to unify these two stances. In this article, I define the concept of information as non-thing, but I also show how information can also be seen as a thing. The article also includes a comparison of my definition of the concept of information with some traditional definitions. In addition, I discuss the necessity of investigating various terms that include the word “information” which are used in library and information science, such as information retrieval and information use.
