In the pre-industrial society, the science or academic study was based on the “dilettantis”, and the scientists studied with their own motives and goals. But in our modern society, the academic research has been institutionalized in all aspects, and simultaneously, the scientists or the academic researchers have become a profession. They must have a certain social role and they must perform their research according to the certain goal of their clients.
In this context, the writer believes that the library must become a social system with certain social function, and that the librarian, especially the reference librarian, should be a profession, too. They would perform the special task in place of their client in order to solve his certain problem. Therefore, they might be the profession of the literature.
