There are about 1,000 medical journals published in Japan. The total number of articles published by these journals is estimated to be about 59,000 by a mail survey of Japanese medical journal editors, and 9,000 articles are appeared in foreign medical journals. From the survey, four major problems can be identified: (1) More than 6090 of articles pub1ished by Japanese medical journals are written by Japanse language, (2) The average rate of rejection in the Japanese journals is very low, (3) As the route of circulation is not open, so foreign researchers cannot access most of Japanese medical journals, (4) Only a few journals are edited by the professional editors.
As the most of Japanese medical journals have not foreign authors and readers, so these journals are merely domestic medical communication media. Japanese medical journals that circulated among foreign researchers are estimated only 60 titles. It is a undeniable fact that numbers of manuscripts reported the results of current research by Japanese researcher would be submitted to foreign medical journals.
