Most of the theories dealing with information retrieval are based on the concepts of set and Boolean algebra. ‘Boolean algebra’ is a general term of several algebraic systems which correspond one-to-one to various logical systems. In the present theory of information retrieval, however, the term ‘Boolean algebra’ is meant to be only an ordinary Boolean algebra, and this restricts the logic of information retrieval to the propositional logic.
Generally, syntactic structures of some language systems are though to be some algebraic systems. So, if we can formulate information retrieval by means of the different types of Boolean algebras from the one used in the existing IR systems, this will leads to the other formulation in the syntax of query languages.
In this paper, we adopt a model theory to formulate the semantics of information retrieval, since it is the most fundamental explanatory frame for communication and is expected to be one of the fundamental tools in library and information science.
