In order to know types of recorded information school teachers need in relation to their activities, the use of recorded information by school teachers was surveyed. Types of recorded information is classified into twelve categories. Three main areas of activity are identified, i. e., the teaching of specific subjects, the extra-curricular activities and the guidance & discipline. A questionnaire was sent to 217 subjects randomly selected from 14 lower secondary schools in three typical Tokyo Metropolitan Wards. 92 completed questionnaires (42%) were returned. Major findings are: 1) in all areas of activity, school teachers use recorded information directly relating to their everyday activities more than theoretical information. 2) But relative use of types of recorded information is different among areas of activity. That is, practical information is used more frequently at teaching of specific subjects and extracurricular activities. More information on specific subjects is used at teaching of specific subjets than the others. Considerable use of theoretical information is found at guidance & discipline.
