In order to overview the present state and characteristics of reference service in Japanese public libraries, mail and field surveys were conducted on all of the 33 city, town and village libraries in Shiga Prefecture. Examined were details of practice as well as recognition of each library on the extent and content of reference service.
The results were: 1) Answering reference questions is the principal work in reference service. 2) Most libraries surveyed are much less active in publicizing reference service and arranging reference materials and equipment easy to access for users. 3) Although most libraries recognize it important, reference service does not form an important part of library work, nor is practiced in it’s full extent.
