For evaluating library book collections there are three ways: (1) numerical measures of the quality of the book collection, (2) proportional analysis of the book collection, and (3) analysis of the book collection by means of check lists.
The author of this theses, in order to find out a most adequate means of or approach to evaluating public library collections in Japen, has tried to cover as comprehensively as possible best examples in the past carried out in the library surveys in the United States of America. Particularly works done by Leon Carnovsky—his articles and reports on the surveys—have been very carefully studied in detail.
Consequently the author has stated eleven view points that signify advantages and dis-advantages of the method by the analysis of the book collection by means of check lists. This may be the most comprehensive study on the subject in Japanese.
