The ultimate goal of those who are engaged in information work is to provide processed, timely and relevant information for the proper decision-maker whom they serve. This information work is carried out in various places such as governmental agencies, local communities, private enterprises, educational and research institutions, but the ultimate goal is all the same.
“Relevance” and “timeliness” of the needed information are determined by specific actual conditions of information needs. The writer of this paper discusses from the standpoint of the information worker in a profit-making enterprise general problems of extracting the needed information from recorded materials, or carriers of information and processing and proving it in a suitable form.
The method discussed here can be applied to finding of even secret information such as management policies of other profit-making enterprises by means of analyzing published data and materials.
