This article was originally submitted to the Japan Library School as a report of the summer practice work at the International Christian University Library in 1962. The university library has two functions; education and research. And the library can assist, in many ways, the university give a full play to its educational functions. The reserve book system is an example. The reporter discusses the origin, significance and necessity of the reserve book system in general and describes the system at the International Christian University Library. The reporter not only takes up some of the problems derived from the reserve book system but points out the factors which arrest the growth of the system in Japanese university libraries.
