The international compatibility and time-lag of JAPAN/MARC (J/MARC) which the National Diet Library has distributed since 1981, were examined.
J/MARC is designed as conforming to UNIMARC, but it’s not completely compatible with UNIMARC. This incomplete compatibility does not come from J/MARC, but UNIMARC, designed without any consideration about the Oriental characters such as the Japaness character. To process the Japanese bibliographic information in UNIMARC, linkages between the Kanji fields and Yomi (reading) fields have to introduce to UNIMARC. Some systems have been suggested in terms of this linkage, but there is no definite one.
The time-lag of J/MARC is actually about 3 months. Considering the situation that the Japanese legal deposit system does not work smoothly, it’s very difficult to shorten this time-lag further. On the other hand, a prompt introduction of CIP is impossible. At the present stage, the use of some publication information files are the only way, but it can not resolve all problems.
